On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11), we are reminding you how much has happened in recent years in terms of equality and how much room there is still for improvement. The statement of the Leopoldina 2022 provides an up-to-date overview and names levels of the necessary interventions: changing structures, empowering women, making women visible, documenting progress and reviewing developments.

The number of female students, doctoral and habilitation women is growing steadily thanks to the measures of gender equality policy, but the proportion of female rectors/presidents/directors is in some cases far less than a third. This is too little; in addition, the focus on LGBTQ+ and BIPoC needs to be sharpened.
