Film Tips: Diversity in Hollywood

In our diversity work, we also use (moving) images time and again, or encourage people to look together in our swarm community from the perspective of diversity. dr Regine Schönenberg, senior consultant at compassorange and life design coach, commented on three films:

“Don’t look up, The power of the Dog and Dune are the most generously-nominated films of 2022. What do they have in common? What stereotypes are they playing with? Where do you appeal to the diversity debate?

Superficially, Don’t look up is about our boundless ignorance as a human species that sticks its head in the sand, does not want to accept the end, whether it will be an astroid or climate change – promoted by non-existent scientific communication and a deadlocked media landscape. The only irritation in this exaggerated description of the current situation is Meryl Streep in the role of the populist, corrupt and vain leader. Would a woman be able to act like that, a woman asks herself and unfortunately has to say yes in the course of the film. Understanding gender is important, attributions qua sex are on shaky ground. But there is more than just one woman in the film, there is also a heroic, albeit “outrageous” opponent. The occurrence of different female main characters is still rather rare.

The power of the Dog and Dune is about masculinity stereotypes that are radically broken and repeatedly take surprising turns. at Dune , it’s predictable that the androgynous boy will morph into a wicked heroic figure; very different in The power of the dog, where we as viewers can witness live the struggle between very diverse ideals/stereotypes of masculinity, are really surprised and yet fall for our own prejudices again and again…every other word would be a spoiler.”
