On November 11th and 12th, 2024, the specialist conference of the KOK – Federal Coordination Circle against Human Trafficking eV (KOK) took place in the ballroom of the Berlin City Mission. Dr. Claudia Neusüß from compassorange moderated the conference. The event marked the 25th anniversary of the KOK and brought together outstanding representatives of civil society, political decision-makers and experts. Current challenges and perspectives in the fight against human trafficking were discussed. The focus: the revised EU directive to combat human trafficking and its national implementation in Germany, including through the envisaged National Action Plan. The conference also highlighted the role of civil society in supporting those affected and enforcing their rights. Other highlights from the (international) speakers and discussants: a keynote by @Bandana Pattanaik, the head of the Global Alliance against Traffic in Women (GAATW) and impressive visionary, Dr. Sangeetha Manavalan-Thoppil from LEFÖ – IBF, the intervention centre for victims of trafficking in women in Austria and Doro W. (Doro Winkler) from the Council of Europe’s expert group on combating trafficking in human beings (GRETA). Naile Taniş, presented the first periodic report of the Reporting Unit on Human Trafficking (German Institute for Human Rights). A panel discussion on the challenges of civil society action as well as discussions on the political strategies for implementing the EU directive and the National Action Plan (Ariane Fäscher (SPD), Denise Loop (BÜ90/The Greens), Elisabeth Winkelmeier-Becker (CDU/CSU). Particular attention was paid to new forms of exploitation, digital challenges and financial investigations in connection with human trafficking. Federal Minister Lisa Paus (Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth) emphasized the importance of cooperation between civil society, politics and administration in the fight against human trafficking and recognized the great work of the KOK.
